The unbeatable combination of unique terrain, spectacular scenery, and a fascinating mining heritage makes Colorado a mountain biker's paradise. This region is brimming with hundreds of miles of backcountry roads and trails that are ideal for high country exploration.

The richly varied topography of the region ranges in elevations between 8,000 and 14,000 feet. Pedaling options exist both in densely forested valleys and hillsides and also among high alpine peaks of the Continental Divide. The variety-filled terrain contains rides for all abilities of bikers that range from relatively smooth dirt roads to rugged single tracks. Thanks to the relentless endeavors of miners, many miles of old pack trails, overgrown wagon routes and deserted railroad grades crisscross the backcountry.

Bike Shops and Rentals can be found in all of the Areas towns and resorts. Many shops simply rent bikes, however there are several full service stores featuring a knowledgeable staff, repair services and cycling accessories as well as rentals. Mountain bikes constitute the bulk of the bike rentals and range from the "hybrid" variety with narrower tires ideal for the paved paths to higher end models sporting suspension shocks. Rentals for the entire family, including children's bikes, helmets and trailers, are common.

The local ski resorts have also gotten into the cycling scene, creating a unique option for novice off-road riders and those wanting a break from the climbing. Copper Mountain, Breckenridge and Keystone all have ski lifts which are outfitted to carry bikes, providing a speedy shortcut up to high alpine terrain and ski area trail systems designed for fat tire riding.
