SummitNet Activity Guide - Fishing

Summer Guide
Winter Guide

Summit and Eagle County offers as much fishing water as anywhere in the country, and any visit here would not be complete without a fly-fishing expedition. The beauty of fly-fishing in the Central Rockies is that there just isn't a bad place to go. You will experience incredible fishing, incredible scenery or both.

The Blue River is one of the most accessible, and most scenic rivers in the Rocky Mountains. Miles of river between the Dillon and Green Mountain Reservoirs can be accessed from Colorado Highway 9. The Blue River is well known throughout the region as one of the finest fishing rivers, and has been designated a Gold Medal fishery due to its high quality. There are plenty of other opportunities in the area as well. The South Platte, the Colorado, and Eagle Rivers are all an easy drive from anywhere in the area.

Lake Dillon is the largest lake in the area and is home to Brown and Rainbow trout, as well as Kokanee Salmon. With 26 miles of shoreline, finding a nice secluded spot to cast is not a problem.

More adventurous fisher folk may want to consider bringing their rod along on just about any hike in the area. The Gore and Ten Mile ranges offer literally hundreds of high alpine lakes and small streams. Willow Creek, Rock Creek and North Ten Mile's drainage all offer good fishing for brook trout. Willow Lakes, Mohawk Lakes and Wheeler Lake are a few of the more popular destinations for high country fisher folk. They are some of the most scenic you'll ever see and hold good numbers of Brook and Cutthroat trout.
