In May, 1859, John H. Gregory found lode gold in a gulch near North Creek in
Central City. In fact his discovery was the first major strike in the Colorado territory, which lead to the state's gold rush.
Within two months, the population swelled to over 20,000 as each newcomer hoped to
stake his claim, and establish his fortune in
the district. Over the next 30 years many fortunes were indeed made in what came to
be known as the, "richest square mile on earth." Millions in gold, silver
and copper were mined from these hills before the boom went bust.
Beginning in October of 1991, gambling was legalized in the three historical mining
towns of Central City, Black Hawk, and Cripple Creek. This is also very unique in
Colorado as these towns are the only areas of legal gambling in Colorado.
Today the spirit of the old West lives again in these three
cities which have been restored to the architecture and atmosphere of the gold
rush days of the 1800's. Now visitors again have the chance to strike gold
in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.
The casinos in general have an old Western theme to go along with the buildings and the
feeling of the town. Many of the casinos have dress codes for the employees that
require an Old West "costume" which adds to the atmosphere.
These casinos provide a fun, low stakes atmosphere for those who enjoy gambling and
the atmosphere of the old West.
