Winter Guide

There are fourteen traditional campgrounds in the area offering camping spaces reserved for both tents and recreational vehicles. Most camping spaces are along the shores of Lake Dillon in two maintained campgrounds. Spaces fill quickly and reservations are required, sometimes weeks in advance for summer weekends and the entire month of August. Not all campgrounds take reservations, however the following do: Heaton Bay with 72 spaces, Lowry Campground with 29 spaces, Peak One Campground with 79 spaces, and Prospector Campground with 109 spaces. Reservations can be made by calling 1-877-444-8777 or online at ReserveUSA.com

For the more adventourous there are lots of trails that can lead to a private campsite in the Colorado backcountry. Most areas require a permit and a small fee. It's a good idea to check with the Forest Service office in Silverthorne before heading out on your own.

The Colorado backcountry ski hut system spans between Aspen, Leadville and Vail. Based on the European tradition of hut-to-hut travel. Today 22 huts provide shelter for experienced backcountry enthusiasts The huts are situated between 9,700 and 11,700 feet in elevation and are linked with over 300 miles of trails. Spectacular terrain within the White River and San Isabel National Forests provides for excellent telemarking, touring and summer exploration. The huts are open for winter use from Thanksgiving through April and for summer use from July 1 through September.
