SummitNet Activity Guide - Bicycle Touring

Summer Guide
Winter Guide

Summit County and the Vail Valley is a bicyclist's paradise with close to 200 miles of paved bike paths and 400 miles of back-country roads and trails. All of this located in a stunning mountain setting, create ideal conditions for two-weeled touring. The richly varied topography of the region presents both novice and advanced mountain bikers with many choices: following historic byways past aging mining camps, retracing abandoned routes of railroads that once passed through the County and exploring the many high alpine roads and trails criscrossing innumerable sky piercing peaks.

The main attraction to bikers is unquestionably the vast network of paved bike paths winding through and between each of the towns and resort in the area. You can literately ride the bike path from Breckenridge to Vail or any of the other towns. These paved trails feature trailhead parking, directional signage, and rest stops. The variety of terrain and difficulty levels accommodate everyone from an infant preferring to watch the world from the comfort of a child trailer to a hill climbing enthusiast.

Bikers of all abilities can choose from an array of riding options ranging from an easy cruise along Lake Dillon's paved bike trail to a challenging ride to the top of Vail pass. You may want to skip the ride up the pass and ride down instead by arranging to be dropped off at the top of the pass. You could choose to ride to the West down to Vail or to the east down to Frisco.

Breckenridge, Frisco, Dillon, Copper Mountain, Vail, Avon, Silverthorne, Keystone are all ideal starting points for bike rides, and each boasts of local favorites that can lead pedalers onto full-day explorations or simply a brief afternoon cruise. Each town contains several top-notch bike shops featuring rentals for the entire family, as well as repair services, books, maps and a wide range of cycling accessories and an intimate knowledge of where to ride.
